The Sound of Music straddles fiction and reality. On the one hand: a maximalist score and fantastical love story –– goatherds, singing governesses, and mystical mountains filled with song. On the other: a true story of 20th century Austrian politics, a grieving widower, and Nazis. Maria enters this dark, serious world and transforms it to a joyous one. I wanted my graphic projections to transform our space into one that could support both of these worlds (much like our protagonist). I created mathematical pen sketches, sensitive to the period architecture of the 1860s Villa Trapp and the benedictine Nonnberg Abbey. I also washed these images in loose water color, and layered bits of ripped sheet music -- reminders of the storybook nature of this semi-fictional family. And of course, the mountains, changing with the times of day, can be spotted in every frame. I wanted to make visible the utter beauty of this musical and its songs that are big enough to fill domes many times higher than ours. I hope my art brings you to hills where your heart beats like the wings of the birds that rise from the lake...
